In the complex and strategic world of Clash of Clans, gaining the upper hand is not just about having the strongest army or the most fortified defences. Rather, it’s about understanding the nuances of the game, learning the strengths and weaknesses of every enemy base you encounter, and executing precise and effective attack strategies. While that’s easier said than done, this guide is here to help, providing you with some tips on how to defeat enemies at every Town Hall level.
Understanding Clash of Clans Attack Basics
Before diving into specific attack strategies, it’s important to have a solid understanding of the basics of Clash of Clans attacks. Here are a few key points to keep in mind:
- Troop Composition: The composition of your army plays a crucial role in the success of your attack. Each troop type has its own strengths and weaknesses, so it’s essential to have a balanced mix. Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for you.
- Base Analysis: Before attacking a base, take the time to analyse its layout and identify potential weak points. Look for exposed defences, gaps in the walls, or traps that you can exploit to your advantage.
- Hero Abilities: Heroes have special abilities that can turn the tide of battle. Make sure to use them strategically during attacks to maximise their effectiveness.
- Spell Placement: Spells are powerful tools that can help you overcome formidable defences. Proper placement and timing of spells can greatly enhance your attack.
- Timing: Timing is everything in Clash of Clans. Wait for the right moment to launch your attack. Look for opportunities when defences are distracted or weakened.
- Upgrades: Don’t neglect your upgrades. Upgrading your troops, spells, and defences will make them stronger and more effective in battle. Prioritise your upgrades based on your playstyle and the strategies you prefer to use. If you want to learn more about which upgrades you should prioritise, check out our COC Upgrade Priorities Guide.
- Resource Management: Manage your resources wisely. Don’t waste your troops or spells on attacks that won’t yield significant gains. Prioritise targets that will give you the most loot or help you progress in the game.
These are just some of the basic mechanics when attacking in Clash of Clans. These are generic tips that can be applied to any attack strategy. However, there are numerous attack strategies available in the game, each with its own unique techniques and considerations.
Town-Hall Specific Strategies
Every Town Hall level has its own unique strategies and considerations. Whatever strategy you have under your belt when you’re at a certain Town Hall level won’t always work as effectively at the next level. This ensures that players are constantly adapting and evolving their strategies as they progress in the game. To help you succeed at each Town Hall level, here are some specific strategies to keep in mind:
Town Hall 1-3
Recommended Troops: Giants, Archers, Wall Breakers
Recommended Spells: None
At these early levels, focus on building your base and upgrading your resource collectors. Don’t worry too much about attacking other players yet, as you don’t have many troops or spells available. Instead, focus on building up your resources and defences. However, you will need to attack other bases eventually. At this stage, you have very limited troops and resources. Remember to eliminate Mortar beforehand. If you overlook this step, Mortar can wipe out your Archers in a blink and jeopardise the entire attack.
Before initiating the attack, make sure to check for Clan Castle troops. If reinforcements are present, use your archers to encircle and eliminate them. Once done, position 1-2 Giants near the defences to divert their attention. Simultaneously, with the help of Archers, start demolishing other structures. If you’re at Town Hall 3, you can use Wall Breakers to aid your Giants in breaking through the base.
Town Hall 4-6
Recommended Troops: Giants, Archers, Balloons, Wizards, Wall Breakers
Recommended Spells: Lightning Spell, Healing Spell
By this point, you will have unlocked more troops and spells, so you can start planning more strategic attacks. Upgrade your army camps and barracks to unlock stronger troops like Wizards, Balloons, and Goblins. These troops can help you take down stronger bases with better defences.
Initiate your attack by focusing on Clan Castle troops. Once done, lure them towards the Mortar by placing an Archer or Barbarian nearby and take them out. This is the time to unleash your Giants and Wall Breakers once you’ve cleared any bombs near walls, followed by your Balloon units. Make sure you release your aerial units before your initial wave gets taken out to maximise your damage.
You can also use your Wizards to support your Giants. Use your Heal Spell when you’re Giants are being targeted base defences. For an immediate attack on the strongest defences like Air Defenses or Mortars, use Lightning Spells. They are essential to gain an upper hand in the attack.
Town Hall 7-9
Recommended Troops: Golem, Wizard, Hog Rider, Barbarian King, Wall Breaker, Minions
Recommended Spells: Healing Spell, Poison Spell, Rage Spell
At these levels, you’re bound to encounter some challenging base designs and strong defensive troops. This is also the time you get to encounter Dragons in Clan Castles. Dragons are best dealt with by isolating them from the rest of the enemy troops and luring them into a corner using your Barbarian. You can then take them out with your Archers and Wizards.
Traps also start to become quite a nuisance at this point, so it’s also wise to send out your Golem to soak up all the damage from traps. Use your Wall Breakers and Wizards to support your Golem as he distracts the base defences. Then send in your Barbarian King and Valkyries for the push. Expect some heavy pushback at this point, so put your offensive Spells and Heal Spells at the ready.
Once you’ve damaged about a third of the base, release a few of your Hog Riders to take out more of the inner defences, then follow it up with the rest of your Hog Riders. Watch out for some AoE defences or bombs. Saving a Heal Spell can be crucial in saving your units.
Town Hall 10-12
Recommended Troops: Zap Dragon, Stone Slammer, Barbarian King, Queen, Hog Rider, Miner
Recommended Spells: Rage Spell, Healing Spell, Earthquake Spell, Lightning Spell
For TH10 and 11, using your Zap Dragons in conjunction with your Lightning Spells will be quite a formidable combo. You start by bombarding the enemy base with three Lightning Spells and an Earthquake on each of the two air defences to take them out. You’ll then send in your heroes, followed by your Zap Dragons and Stone Slammers. The strategy is simple enough and easy to deploy, but you need to get the right placement so your dragons and heroes can survive the onslaught.
For TH12, utilising your Queen and your Hog Riders is a popular pick for the level. You start by sending in your Queen, a couple of healers, and some funnelling units to target base defences. You basically create a path for the Queen so she can take out the Clan Castle with ease. Deploy your Barbarian King and Siege Barracks to funnel your next wave of troops, which will be composed of Miners and Hog Riders. Make sure you have your Rage Spells and Heal Spells at the ready once you begin this phase of the attack.
Town Hall 13-15
Recommended Troops: Archer Queen, Yeti, Queen, Hog Rider, Miner, Siege Machine, Super Wall Breaker, Battle Drill
Recommended Spells: Rage Spell, Heal Spell, Freeze Spell
Queen Charge tactics dominate TH13 to 15. This means your Queen will be at the centre of it all as you funnel her inside the base with your units. You can always mix and match by using Super Archers or the Archer Queen. The idea is to create a good enough mix of units for the Queen Charge, which will clear a path for your Queen to take down the Town Hall as soon as possible. You can use the Archer Queen and a bunch of Healers to create a funnel for the Queen. Alternatively, you can use a Yeti and Super Archer combo for the funnel. As mentioned earlier, Hog Riders and Miners are also great picks. Follow the same pattern as with TH12 and create a funnel to finish the battle in as little time as possible.
There you have it! Those are just some of the most popular and effective attack strategies for every Town Hall level in Clash of Clans. Remember, mastering these strategies takes practice, patience, and a keen understanding of the game. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t succeed right away. None of these strategies are perfect anyway, and it will all depend on the specific base layout and defences you encounter. So keep experimenting, learning from your mistakes, and refining your strategies. And most importantly, have fun! Clash of Clans is a game, after all, so enjoy the process of building your army, planning your attacks, and engaging in epic battles. Good luck, Chief!
