VALORANT is Riot’s take on the popular 5v5 multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) genre, where one team attacks and the other defends. It’s a smart blend of pinpoint gunplay and character shooter, meaning the ‘Agents’ themselves play a bigger impact on the game.
Speaking of characters, we’ll teach you how to unlock more Agents that you don’t get to use for free at the beginning. This way, you won’t have to settle playing the same character for hours. It’s good to have variety and to try new skills in this fun and competitive game.
Agents Assemble
The Agents in VALORANT have their own unique sets of abilities. They are very flexible and can augment the team in a sort of way. One of the exciting challenges therefore is how to create a good chemistry between these agents to reign over the opponent.
As of the moment, there are 12 Agents available. Five of them are unlocked and free to play at the start. They are Phoenix, Sage, Sova, Brimstone and Jett. This enables players to have at least one Agent to use, as VALORANT requires only one of each character played on a team for the entire match. For the remaining ones (Raze, Breach, Cypher, Viper, Omen, Reyna and Killjoy), you will need to invest and grind to earn experience to unlock them. Here are the ways.
Level Up
Play matches to earn XP. This is by far the simplest way to get a new Agent. When you first log in, you will see the Latest tab displaying your current XP and the progress bar. You will earn experience by playing through games and completing the tiers of the introductory contract. You can also gain XP by winning rounds in matches.
When you reach level 5, you get a free Agent unlock. Get to level 10 and you will get another one. You can redeem them at the Agents tab from the collection menu. Simply playing for a period of time will guarantee you a pair of new characters to work on. How long? It will depend on how well you fare on the battlefield.
Complete Contracts
After completing the introductory contract, you now have access to Agent Contracts. Just go to the Collection tab in the main menu and look for Contracts. Scroll over to a locked Agent and view the contract. From there, you will need to finish specific missions to earn more XP. You can play along with other Agents to progress. Once you reach level 5, the reward is the agent itself. You can also unlock really cool cosmetic items associated with that agent as you progress.
This setup allows players to choose Agents that they want to play. Just remember, only one Agent contract can be active at a time and don’t forget to ‘Activate Contract’ before you dive right in.
