League of Legends Ranked (2)

League of Legends (LoL) is an immensely successful multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game created and marketed by Riot Games. It has been one of the most extensively played and influential games in the esports market since its introduction in 2009.

Ranked play has always been a part of the League of Legends experience, allowing players to demonstrate their abilities and climb the competitive ladder. Riot Games has set out to revolutionize the competitive environment with the recent announcement of the new ranked system, offering exciting innovations and new chances for players worldwide.

Overview of the New Ranked System

The new League of Legends ranked system solves past rank distribution gaps, in which many players were branded one tier lower than their true skill level. The new approach guarantees that each rank represents its intended skill level by changing to a more equitable percentage split based on Gold, offering a fair and realistic advancement experience. The goal is to correlate the rank distribution with player expectations, allowing ranks to more accurately represent player competence and create a more pleasant and rewarding competitive environment.

Emerald, which you may remember from League of Legends: Wild Rift, is also a new rank. Emerald will be positioned between Diamond and Platinum, representing roughly the same percentage of players as Platinum.

What are the ranks in LoL

In competitive League of Legends, players can advance through ten ranks. Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger are the ranks in ascending order. Each rank is symbolized by a distinct symbol representing a player’s skill level and growth in the game. The following is a breakdown of the rank symbols.

  1. Iron
  2. Bronze
  3. Silver
  4. Gold
  5. Platinum
  6. Emerald
  7. Diamond
  8. Master
  9. Grandmaster
  10. Challenger

How tiers and divisions work in ranked League of Legends

The ranking system between Iron and Diamond has four divisions within each rank. However, these divisions do not apply to the top ranks (Challenger, Grandmaster, and Master). To progress to the next rank, players must advance through all four divisions within their current rank.

For example, a player must progress from Bronze IV to Bronze I before ranking up to Silver and starting the process again at Silver IV.

Players need to accumulate 100 League Points (LP) to move up a division. Once they reach 100 LP in the first division of their rank, they typically enter a promotional series where they must win three out of five games to advance to the next rank.
