Greetings beloved Travelers! Is this your first time wandering around the fantasy world of Teyvat? You don’t have to worry about going solo in your adventure because we’ll teach you how to unlock more playable characters for free in Genshin Impact.
At the start of the game, you’ll begin your quest with a single character. But as the story progresses, you will have the chance to build your own roster of playable characters, each one possessing unique abilities and combat skills. This is usually done by making Wishes, the game’s gacha system which will require you to spend on Acquaint or Intertwined Fate to pull. (We’ll discuss more about Wishes in our next post). But for now, all you need to do is play the game and you’ll get these six characters free of cost!
The Traveler (Anemo or Geo)
The Traveler is your first character in Genshin Impact. You can pick between the male (named Aether in English) or female (Lumine) twin to begin your journey. They travel across the universe until an Unknown God captured one of them that left them stranded in Teyvat. They are the main protagonists, but the good thing is, you don’t necessarily have to keep them in your party rotation all the time. However, expect to have them pop up in most conversations with their travel companion Paimon and other cutscenes as the story progresses.
The Traveler begins the adventure possessing an Anemo element. You can unlock the Geo version once you visit a Geo Statue of the Seven and interact with it. From there you can switch between the elements according to your preference.
Amber (Pyro)
Next in line is Amber. Once you meet Paimon, you’ll immediately encounter Amber who is free to receive in the Prologue Act I: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind, during the quest Winds of the Past. Just follow the storyline and you’ll be able to recruit her to your roster. She may be one of the most feeble characters in the game, but most players rely on her bow and arrow skills to light torches from afar to unlock chests and puzzles.
Kaeya (Cryo)
When you enter Monstadt, still in Act I during the Crash Course quest, you’ll be able to unlock your third character for free — Kaeya. He is the charming, overly laid-back Cavalry Captain of the Knights of Favonius. He has a flair for dramatics, and it will be evident with his interaction with certain characters. If you prefer direct and hard-hitting action, Kaeya’s basic attack unleashes several strikes at once when charged, while his elemental skill casts three cryo balls which explode on impact. What we love about Kaeya is that he can freeze things, including large bodies of water so you can traverse them.
Lisa (Electro)
Lisa, the humble librarian of the Knights of Favonius, is free to obtain right after you recruit Kaeya. When you enter Monstadt, you’ll take on the quest called Sparks Amongst the Pages (with a recommended Adventure Rank 5). You just have to follow the quest marker and go through it. Lisa is a proficient witch. She can call down lightning with an electro AOE damage and create a homing lightning orb to damage enemies. She may not be as powerful as other mages, but she is pretty decent as your starter. Besides, she’s free, that’s what’s important!
Xiangling (Pyro)
Let’s jump over to one of the most challenging, free-to-get characters in the game, Xiangling. Obtaining her will not be a walk in the park. First, you need to reach Adventure Rank 20 to unlock the Spiral Abyss. From there, you and your squad must clear dungeons that get harder as you progress. Once you complete Floor 3, Chamber 3 of the abyss challenge, you’ll be able to unlock the head chef herself of Wanmin Restaurant.
Xiangling is a great addition to your party because of three things: fast spear attacks, her Panda summon (Guoba Attack) deals continuous damage, and her ultimate deals wide and increasing damage as it hits a target.
Noelle (Geo)
The dutiful maid and budding knight Noelle is technically not a free character per se. She is sort of free for new players as a guaranteed drop in their first 10-set pull from the Beginner’s Banner. Noelle is a tank with a gigantic greatsword. She can generate self-healing shields and is absolutely fun to watch when she AOE-wallops monsters with her weapon.
